had a chance to do a PhD/Master’s, a combined program in Hong Kong. I just took it! And when my supervisor went for a sabbatical to Sydney, I followed him for four months. Then I had this awesome position at TU Darmstadt so I came to Germany. I didn’t want to belong to any country! Why did you want to leave Turkey? Also, does traveling around like this have a personal price? It’s not that I wanted to leave Turkey. It’s mostly that I wanted to see the world and what is going on. There are other places where the research fits me more. If I had an opportunity that was great in Turkey, I could have stayed there too. I just took the chances that came my way. Yes, it does come with a price. Although you meet a lot of wonderful people, it’s hard to make long-term connections with people because I’m always traveling or living somewhere else. Sometimes you have problems adapting to different cultures. Of course, you learn. Then it becomes an awesome thing. In research, you also need to adjust to the university and make networks, and connections, and collaborations. For me, in every university I joined, I had to start all over again. Sometimes you need to learn slightly different research areas.
