ICCV Daily 2021 - Thursday

Do you think you’ll stay abroad for many more years? Will you ever stay in one place forever? Yes, I think when I have an assistant professor position, it will be more likely that I will settle down. Then, it’s a little bit more long-term. I cannot make any decisions now because in academia, wherever you find a job, you just go there. It sounds like you see yourself in research and teaching. Why did you choose academia? Just a side disclaimer: I also have a small startup. It doesn’t take a lot of my time, but on paper I am Co- Founder, and I sometimes consult them. I am definitely mostly interested in academia. In some ways, my plans and my interests do not align with industry. They align more with research. Although yes, I like the applications when we do a project, it interests me more to just answer the question. When you create a product that you need to sell, I’m not as much interested in that part. I’m more interested in just spending time answering the questions. Sometimes even the questions that I’m interested in have no place in industry. You have many decades of research ahead of you. Which topic would you like to explore if you had the funding? I already think my current research was worth investing my time in. Is there something that I aim for? I’m really excited about the connections between the brain and facial behavior; What is going on in the brain and how it is embodied on our faces. If I can model it with AI, and with computational models, then I would be really happy! Do you have anything else you would like to share with the community? I might say to the AI and machine learning community that I would very much like to collaborate in person, and go to conferences in person, and have people go back to university. More than 100 inspiring interviews with successful Women in Science in our archive! Xi Yin 25 DAILY ICCV Thursday “I wanted to see different cultures and different research.” Cigdem Tura
