17 Ruth Fong DA I L Y What is the thing that you miss the most about New Jersey? I have a lot of pride for New Jersey because everyone kind of makes fun of New Jersey. Do they? Especially in the US, yes. One of the things that I love about New Jersey is that I think it’s one of the most densely populated states in the US. You get this wide range of diversity along all sorts of axes. When I grew up, there were all sorts of people in my school, from all sorts of backgrounds, all sorts of races and cultures. I didn’t realize until I moved to other parts of the US and in the world that that wasn’t the case. To me, that was really beautiful. There was a recent documentary on a special Olympic swim team in New Jersey, and I knew some of the participants. It really captured that diversity well. Tell me something about Oxford? What is the best thing that you found in Oxford? It’s really green. In the US, because it’s such a large country, there’s so much space. There are not strong incentives to be conservative. One thing that I really like is that you can find a lot more green spaces in Oxford, even in London, like parks. I can go on a 15 minute bike ride in any direction, and I’ll hit farm field. Where is your home? I think the US would still be my home because that’s where I grew up. Home is where you grew up? Very often, no. No, so I think my partner and I have a really strong affinity to Boston because that’s where we went to school, we met, and we still have a lot of friends. It’s mainly based on where we have relationships, family, and friends.
