16 Women in C. Vision DA I L Y Aren’t you riding a horse which is doomed to fail? I think if the world was purely capitalist then this would fail. It seems like society always has some sort of active bystanders. I think companies are realizing that people are scared of AI. The depictions of AI come from science fiction, whether it’s based on reality or fiction. There is a real desire from people to understand these models and make sure that they are doing the right thing. If it was just up to the companies, maybe there wouldn’t be as much interest. Because there is this public pressure aspect, we can kind of hold companies accountable. If democracy and people’s voices have stake, then I have great hope that people will still care about ethics. It’s still unclear how much people really care. There is an aspect of educating people. I know from people who do deepfake stuff that it’s very important to communicate that deepfake exists, just like that Photoshop exists. When someone sees an image or a video, they have this understanding that this could be edited in some way. Do you see yourself more as a researcher or in a teaching career? I hope to stay in academia. Teaching and mentoring are things that I personally love. Also, it’s really important for the field because it’s going to be such a hot domain in the coming century. One thing we can do to ensure safety and accountability is to make sure the diversity of people that are sitting at the table. We have this unique situation where there’s a bit of a brain drain in the teaching and academic community because a lot of people are moving to companies, for some good reasons… money, good resources, the ability to launch large projects. I do think this has a negative effect on our ability to mentor the next generation. For me, teaching and mentoring are big components. I’m also really interested in the research aspect.
