Johanna Wald 59 Not everyone ends up doing a PhD. Why did you put this burden on yourself? I don’t think it’s a burden. I think it’s more curiosity. I’m finding something that’s a challenge. If you don’t find something that challenges you, it also doesn’t change you. You want to learn something. You’re excited. You’re eager to find a new topic. If you always do the same thing, you don’t grow. That’s what it’s all about. I would be bored if I had to work on something that’s not challenging. I’msure you havemore passion for what you are doing than avoiding boredom. Probably you are also right. Why did you decide to end up studying at TUM? I actually ended up working with the team where I’m right now doing my PhD when I was looking for a master’s thesis topic and a supervisor for my master’s thesis topic. In the weeks when I started to work with these people, I realized that I felt so welcome that I also did my PhD with them. They’re amazing, and I felt involved right from the first week. It was a no brainer for me. I didn’t even consider other options because I was really excited that I had that opportunity. How is it to work with Federico Tombari and Nassir Navab? It ’s great to work with them! Both “Believe in yourself!” Federico and Nassir are extremely supportive supervisors and just amazing on a personal and professional level. Can you share one of the best things you learned? I think one of the things I learned in general, also before my PhD, is you are not alone in this world. You should actually ask for help if you feel like you need help. What is equally important, is that you should offer help, if you can. If we help each other, we can grow more than ever.
