He adds: “We received really high quality work, but we also made it attractive by having a new way of publishing these conference papers.t’s an entirely open access and open review publication model. It’s aIproper proceeding compilation which is what maybe led to so many people submitting good work.” MIDL2019 accepted open reviews and discussions in which other readers could comment on the paper. Some participants found this very useful. Even some of those who had their paper rejected asked to keep their submissions online to view the commentary. This year’s MIDL conference saw a few changes compared to the year prior. The organizers took a risk by setting an earlier deadline for submission of full papers in December, not knowing whether enough people were prepared. They were pleasantly surprised to receive 120 paper submissions. Because they received so many, they made it a competitive scientific program as well. MIDL2019 also expanded to include “extended abstracts” , which allowed people to have two ways of contributing papers. The conference included unpolished, three-page preliminary work that the community discussed. MIDL also invited people to submit summaries of previously published journal articles but never before presented at a conference. The growing interest in conferences like MIDL reflects a larger trend in the medical imaging field. The 22nd MICCAI (the International Conference on Medical Image Computing and Computer Assisted Intervention), which will take place from October 13th to October 17th in Shenzhen, Ben shares: “This part worked so well that we got 160 extended abstract submissions. We could select from there, but we were very inclusive because we wanted people to come and talk about their work.” From a technology standpoint, the organizers felt impressed with the number of high-quality submissions. They didn’t see this as a second-tier conference. In terms of the scientific quality, MIDL represents the top in the field, even as a young conference. “we wanted people to come and talk about their work.” 34 Event
