How did you get from Japan to Berkeley? I went to an American high school in Japan. That’s why I speak English since I was little. And you decided after this American school that you wanted to study university in America? Yes, my parents said: “ We’ll let you go to this school where you can learn English, and it’ll be good for you, but you can’t go to an American university. ” When I was like in third grade I said, “ Okay .” But then later, it made me really want to do this. I studied hard so I could get my own scholarship and go myself. Were your parents unhappy about that? No, later I convinced them because I was working hard, and I could get into a university in the States. Why didn’t they want you to go to an American university? I guess they were sad. I don’t know. I was little; and they were worried. Are you their only daughter? I am the only daughter. That was easy to guess. Then I ended up going. Now they miss you! Now they’re happy because I do what I like to do. Sounds like good parents. They are. Do you go to visit? Yea, I do like once or twice a year. Are they also scientists? No, they’re not at all actually. It’s interesting. Where did you get the idea of becoming a scientist?
