Computer Vision News - January 2017

We had the chance to speak with the Portuguese founders of boomApp: João da Maia Jorge and Nuno Moutinho . With the motto “make the world clickable”, boomApp allows people to scan an image or video using their smartphone or tablet. It will then near instantly provide more information about that image or video. Let’s say, for example, you are watching a TV show, and you don’t know the name of the actor on the screen. With boomApp, you can simply scan what you are watching to get extra information about it. You can do that in a cinema, in front of a poster or while watching a video on YouTube , Netflix or Amazon : boomApp will help you explore it in a fast and effective way. Best friends João and Nuno founded the company together. As the CEO of boomApp, João has a background in business and actually taught himself how to program. For that reason, he considers himself more of an engineer than just a manager. Altogether, boomApp includes a team of 5 people with 3 engineers and 2 business developers. Nuno, the CTO of boomApp, has a PhD in computer vision and is an expert in the “magic” of taking an idea and actualizing it into real technology for everyone to use. Nuno likes to use the word “magic” when describing the app, because it allows people to see beyond images and videos. Instead of clicking on a computer, you are clicking on real images through your phone.
