CVPR Daily - Wednesday

4 DAILY CVPR Wednesday Editorial... Good morning CVPR! We hope you are all enjoying the conference so far. We have already seen an action-packed four days, including 53 workshops, 32 tutorials, and hundreds of presentations from the very best of the community. At this mid-way point, we are reflecting on a fascinating week so far, and looking forward to so much more to come. Going into this virtual event, we were aware that we could not replicate the physical experience entirely, so we have tried to offer attendees something unique. We hope you agree we have achieved that! In particular, we were mindful of our international audience who are spread all over the world and many who are still observing covid-19 restrictions. We adopted a 24-hour schedule that spread papers over many different time zones. With this 24-hour schedule in mind, we wanted to avoid allocating papers based on time zone thereby creating geographical sessions (e.g., North/South American papers, European/Africa papers, Asia/Australia papers). As a result, the papers have been distributed randomly across the paper sessions to give everyone an equal chance to see each other's work. We want to say a big congratulations to everyone who got their paper accepted. Around 23% of submissions made it . CVPR remains one of the top vision conferences, and it is prestigious to have your paper accepted here. It is a testament to all your hard work and effort, and you should be very proud . Given the virtual nature of the conference, gone are the usual orals and posters, and instead, every paper gets a five-minute video and PDF poster, as well as a live Q&A session . Sometimes in a physical conference it can feel like there is a hierarchy with orals above posters in the pecking order, this is simply not true. We have worked hard this year to break that down and ensure everyone is on an equal footing. An asynchronous text chat is also available for each paper. If you have not used it yet, it is a great way to let people know you are interested in their work. At any time, you can post a message, the authors can reply, and there is an opportunity for you to follow-up. There is also a ‘Who’s here?’ button that will show you who is available if you want to initiate a discussion. This year is the first time we have offered curated social activities for students, with invited mentors from the community. At a physical event, it can be hard to gain access to people like this as they are always in high demand, so we highly encourage you to check those out if you have not already. And remember, this is a very welcoming community . Our senior scientists and engineers are all kind and generous. They want to help. We were all students once, so please do not feel at all nervous about putting yourself out there! We also want students to take the opportunity to go to every paper session. We have 12 sessions in total, and I hope you have been getting attending. Every session
