MIDL Vision 2021

4 Editorial Good morning MIDL 2021! MIDL and RSIP Vision (the publisher of Computer Vision News ) have partnered once again to bring MIDL Vision to the community, highlighting some of the best of this year’s virtual conference. We’ve seen some outstanding work showcased so far and there is so much more to come! We’ve worked hard to create a lively and interactive environment for you all to mimic as close as possible the experience of a physical conference. We all miss being together , so we have paid special attention to the social aspects of the event, and being international, we have organized the live elements at a time that will enable the most people to take part. A big congratulations to everyone who had their paper accepted because that is no mean feat! This year there are full papers and short papers. Full papers are fully developed conference publications, while short papers could be a recently published high quality journal paper, or a preliminary idea that shows great promise. 60 full papers and 63 short papers made the final list. 18 full papers have been selected for long orals and in-depth discussion sessions, while 42 full papers and 63 short papers have short orals with discussion sessions. We have scheduled viewing sessions for all presentations, but they are also available to watch anytime. The winner of our Best Paper award will take home a graphics card that has been sponsored by NVIDIA , and our runner-up will get a € 500 cash reward. Good luck! We’d like to say a big thank you to all our reviewers . We aimed for a fast turnaround for reviews, and even with a two-week period for author rebuttal and discussion, we achieved it. There were some constructive and engaging discussions, and all reviewers considered rebuttals in their final decisions. In the spirit of openness, we encouraged people to sign their reviews, but they could remain anonymous if they wished. Our reviewer awardwinners have all taken on roles as chairs for the oral discussion sessions. Newcomers are a special focus this year because we don’t want people to feel intimidated or overwhelmed if this is their first time at an event like this. Last week we held our first satellite event for junior researchers – the MIDL Doctoral Symposium 2021 . It was a fascinating day and a chance to get to know fellow students in advance of the main event. We’ve also introduced the concept of study groups , where senior researchers and selected PhD students discuss papers and come up with interesting questions for authors ahead of the interactive sessions. Before we go, we must give a shout-out to our colleagues on the Conference VISION MIDL
