MICCAI 2022 Daily – Tuesday

23 DAILY MICCAI Tuesday Yeah, or the industry. But I also think the temporary contracts are a huge problem, so that puts a lot of pressure. So if there was a bit more money from industry or government … I mean, I'm in the lucky position that my position is paid by industry, but others don't. You are in a lucky position, of course. What seems to me is that there is a lot of pressure in this job, in this career, and it's not the part that you like the most. Actually, would you be able to give the best of yourself even without this pressure? Am I wrong? Yes. I think if the environment was more relaxed, then people could concentrate on the research and wouldn't have to worry. It didn't happen to me. But I know many people. Have you seen burn out around you? Yeah. I think in a way, it's normal for a PhD student to have those. Ups and downs and ups and downs. I think it's impressive that many keep fighting and they manage. I have a secret for you also. In my field, in marketing, we have ups and downs and ups and downs because the market goes up and the market goes down. We have just the same pressure, just in a different language, but it's pretty much the same pressure because if you feel competition, imagine competition in business, it's even much worse. Was it a difficult choice to make your career choices? That was probably the decision whether I should go to industry or stay in academia. It was tough because I'm working. So I first tended towards industry and then decided to go for the research position, and it turned out well. So if you had a little sister to advise, you probably would give her the same advice. I'm not sure, because those choices are so individual. If it works for me, It doesn't mean that it works for someone else. That's very much true. She should do whatever she wants. Do you have a last message for our readers? It doesn't matter if there are ups and downs, like all of us had to go through at a certain point. It feels very nice if you manage to go through it!
