MICCAI 2021 Daily - Tuesday
Over 85 million patients are admitted to intensive care units every year, but only up to 50 per cent of them survive. These are the most critical patients who have on average five days to live, so they cannot afford to lose time. The associated costs of treating these patients are well over a trillion dollars worldwide. Third Eye realized the problem was that organ failure is often detected too late, so interventions are delayed, and the actual chance of survival is very low. It is using AI to understand a patient’s entire digital footprint in the ICU to predict organ failure in advance and give clinicians a longer time window to intervene before it is too late. There have been other attempts at creating early warning systems . The most widely used is called MEWS, the Modified Early Warning Score , which is typically for septic shock onset. The problem is these systems do not capture the full extent of patient deterioration. They are based on a static and predefined set of variables, but patients are dynamic, and a number of different characteristics need to be observed to determine a patient’s failure rate. There is a need to create a universal failure prediction system that looks more generally at how the patient is deteriorating and is not limited to one particular problem. That is the novelty of this project. Until now, the curated data and possible solutions for harnessing this data to make a solid prediction were not available. However, advances in data collection and the advent of deep learning have enabled the creation of more sophisticated AI algorithms that can make stronger predictions . 20 DAILY MICCAI Tuesday Startup Village Samyakh Tukra is the founder and CEO of Third Eye . He is also currently a final-year PhD student at Imperial College London under the supervision of Stamatia Giannarou at the Hamlyn Centre. Third Eye is creating an early warning system for organ failure in intensive care. The company is participating in the Startup Village at this year’s conference and Samyakh is here to tell us more about it.
