was leading my group in retinal images using machine learning and artificial intelligence. Where did you study in Spain? I did it in Valladolid, a city in the north central part of Spain. I come from southwestern Spain. Southwestern Spain sounds very nice, whereabouts? I come from Extremadura, a very rural area. We are not very well known, but it is a beautiful place. You are a country girl. Yes, I am. I am proud to say it. [ both laugh ] Did you grow up with horses and cows? Well, no horses. But chickens, hens, pigs, and cows. Why did you go to the north of Spain to study? I wanted to do engineering, telecommunication engineering. I like mathematics a lot, but I especially like applied science. I searched for where this was possible and for the best universities. Valladolid was a nice city, a bit far away from my home. I also had the opportunity to go to Madrid, but to be honest, being a country girl, I was a bit scared of a big city! [ laughs ] I can imagine. They have trains, cars... that can be very dangerous! [ both laugh ] When did you discover your gifts in science? I don’t know about being gifted, but I really like it. I was always interested in it from the beginning. I love to solve problems. I still do. It was all the logic and numbers. It was easy for me to understand. I always wanted to know more about it. Do you still feel that way? I am still a problem solver, and I am really intrigued by all the different technologies and solutions that we can apply to solve problems. Do you wish to solve one problem in particular?
