MICCAI 2019 Wednesday

MICCAI 2019 DAILY 6 Women in Science May it also lead to a point where we failed to include industry as much as we should have? Yes, industry has a big role. Industry, in our field, has traditionally made big equipment. I think that currently, things are changing. As an academic, you can get much closer to what the clinical needs are than industry can. In hospitals, they like to keep a distance from industry. They provide them with solutions and are not seen so much as partners. Until we have a world where partnerships drive healthcare much more than financial gain, that's going to be quite difficult for everyone to work together. Their priorities are different. What are your first thoughts about this visit to the Chinese Silicon Valley and MICCAI 2019? As a community at MICCAI, we are pretty integrated. One thing that is very different is that the healthcare systems across different parts of the world are very different. They are developing at different rates. Engagement in the industry can be partly driven by that as well… if you were Europe, North America, or Asia, and Asia is very large, so different parts of Asia. Some of the projects that I'm working on in Africa, on a country by country basis, have different healthcare systems. That makes it very difficult to feel globally you are all together. Healthcare delivery is not globally the same. What would you suggest to the younger students coming here to MICCAI for the first or second time? What should they do to bring MICCAI forward? It's great that people come to an academic meeting, and they are publishing. They need to think carefully about where their work might go in the future more. Also, their algorithm isn't the solution to healthcare needs, but it's the starting point. If they're really keen onunderstandingmoreaboutwhere their algorithm goes, they need to talk to doctors. They need to talk to industry. They need to gain a better understanding of the challenges of translation, how long it takes, and why it's hard. Those are all parts of developing as a researcher. They've got time to do that too. What is the achievement that you are most proud of in the years in your profession? That's always a difficult question! This is what I'm here for! [laughs] I'm always most proud of my students! Developing people is always very rewarding. Then, seeing how they go, you can help
