MICCAI 2018 Daily - Monday

What is the next step? That’s a good question because one of my reasons to be at MICCAI, actually, is to answer this question. Now, I am looking for different opportunities, and I’m open to any nice, new challenges. So Hoda is available for offers, and she is a great catch! Yes, I came here to talk with some people and see what the interesting positions are. We better learn about you before somebody comes and takes you away. Would you like to remain a researcher? Are you thinking of going to academia? No, that’s actually not an option for me because we already discussed the possibility of doing a postdoc. I wouldn’t like to stay in academia. For now, I’d like to go to an industry environment, experience a new environment, and see how different it is. For now, I really want to go outside of the academy. Where do you see your career going? I don't know. For now, I guess I’ll stay outside of academia, but who knows? Maybe, in the future, I’ll come back. This has a very low chance. Let’s talk about geography. You’re a mix of several places. You are living in the Netherlands. Yes, I am originally from Iran. About six years ago, my husband and I moved to the Netherlands. He is also Iranian. Yes, he started his own Ph.D. in Maastricht University, and I joined him. I started to work. Then, after a while, I started my Ph.D. Now, I’m finishing my Ph.D. So it’s a family of scientists? [ laughs ] Yes, you can say that! Were the previous generations also scientists? My parents, no, not really scientists, but maybe for my husband, yes. For me, no. What was the inspiration that brought you to scientific matters? My background is in biomedical engineering. Then, during my bachelor’s and master’s, I did some, not very deep research, but as a graduation project. In Iran? Yes, I did everything but a Ph.D. in Iran. Then, when I finished my master’s, I also did some research after my master’s. I don’t exactly know how it works in other countries, but in the Netherlands, I really liked the Ph.D. positions. You become employed by the university. Then, you have four years of time to do your own research. I guess, in some universities, they consider you as a student. You need to follow a lot of courses, which I don’t like. Here, in the Netherlands, it’s really interesting Hoda is available for offers, and she is a great catch! Hoda Sharei 19 Monday
