Maria Vakalopoulou ISBI DAILY Thursday 15 “ You are talking with doctors, you understand the problem, you know that you will create a system that, in the end, will help people… ” that the same algorithms could also be applicable in the medical with different restrictions, of course, and different problems. Anyway, you have this problem when you’re using satellite images. I tried to apply them in medical and it was good. I also liked that you have an impact in what you’re doing. You are talking with doctors, you understand the problem, you know that you will create a system that, in the end, will help people. Is this important for you? Yes, it is very important. Why is it so? As an engineer or as a scientist, you can have ideas that you want to implement. But when you feel that your ideas have an impact to the society and to people that have problems like diseases, cancer, I think that this gives you a little bit more push to work on it and to make it better. Is it a dream of yours to impact society? Yes, of course, I would like to, at some point, to do something like this. Do you have an idea in what? Currently I am experimenting. [ Laughs ] I am trying to work both on remote sensing and medical, because remote sensing is quite important I think. Maybe you will not help people, but you create systems that can help in their everyday life. So again, I think there are a lot of things that you can do in that society. For now, I am in both communities and I try to create methods that will be applied in both of them. Do you see yourself more having a career in research rather than teaching? No, I like teaching a lot. Currently, I also like supervising a lot of people because you can see that they become better, and better, and better, and this is something that you feel every day. Okay. Now, you have to choose: whether in your career, you will have
