ICCV Daily 2021 - Wednesday

24 DAILY ICCV Wednesday is fascinating. Also, it is very challenging. This was my first project working with Professor Hao Su. Professor Hao is very patient. He spends a lot of time with us, discussing every detail with us. I also collaborate with my colleague Rui Chen. We came up with a very good idea. We worked hard to come up with an algorithm and had our paper accepted at ICCV. This experience was very encouraging and gave me a lot of confidence. We produced some good results and it was a very exciting experience. What’s the best surprise you had, when working with people in California? The students in our lab are very smart. They have a very strong background coming from top universities. Most of them already published papers as undergraduate students. Compared with my first research work and my PhD studies, they already have a lot of research experience. I think they received research directions quite early in their studies. I was impressed by how passionate they are about their research projects. I feel very excited to collaborate with my colleagues in California. Can you also tell us some of the differences between studying in China, Hong Kong, and California? Hong Kong is a diverse city. Professor Pedro comes from Brazil. He pays attention to the work-life balance, compared to my advisor in California. He spends more time with his family. One thing that is similar between Hong Kong and California is that they are both located in great places by the ocean with hiking trails. We relax, go hiking, and go to the ocean. One difference between research in Hong Kong and in California is the Bay Area: a lot of companies are located there so students in California have better chances to do internships at top companies. In Hong Kong, choices are more limited. Research resources seem better in California than Hong Kong. Still, Hong Kong is a great place for students in research because you can concentrate on your studies there. Women in Computer Vision
