2 Poster Presentation 14 Youssef Alami Mejjati is a final-year PhD student at the University of Bath in the UK, under the supervision of Darren Cosker and Kwang In Kim. His paper presents an algorithm that allows you to automatically redirect visual attention. He speaks to us ahead of his poster today. This work models a new algorithm that can alter an image to r edirect attention towards a specific region fast and efficiently without creating artefacts . For example, if you have four people and want to emphasize one person out of the four, the algorithm can do that automatically. The main challenge is to do it realistically . Putting a red circle on the face of the person you want to draw attention to will work, but it will not be very subtle. The challenge is to find a balance between realismand redirecting attention effectively. How do you solve this? “By using a neural network that predicts parametric transformations,” Youssef explains. “In our case, it was sharpening, exposure, contrast, and tone and color adjustment. The neural network will produce two different sets of parameters, one for the foreground and one for the background. These parameters when applied simultaneously will create the pop-up effect that we are looking for here.” The fact that the algorithm can predict parameters means it can be applied on images independently of their resolution , and on videos without creating jittering artefacts . In addition, it allows the user to finetune the image edits at test time by modifying each parameter individually at interactive rates. This can be useful when the algorithm fails, or when the user is looking for a specific effect. The same algorithm can be extended to produce multi-style edits and to shift the attention away from an object rather than towards it. This kind of solution has many real-world applications .
