She is now a PhD student in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at King’s College London. Her project focuses on fairness in cardiac imaging. She aims to find the sources of bias and develop methods to address and mitigate them. Her talk started with a brief introduction to existing types of bias in society and fairness. She presented a wide range of insight related to the discovery of performance issues detected in a cardiac segmentation setting. She discovered, using a technique called GradCAM, that the model used different areas of the scan unrelated to the heart to make its final prediction. A different set of experiments showed that crops around the heart as an input resulted in only an accuracy of around 50%, whereas other inputs with the heart blurred showed comparable performance with the non-augmented data! Her entire talk is in the following page.
