2 Summary AI in Medical Imaging 14 genomics? Klaus adds that there is sti l l a large gap between method development and translation of methods, but there are multiple reasons for that, including methodologic, regulatory and ethical chal lenges. It ’s hard for smal ler spin-off companies at the moment who have one nice method to real ly get off the ground, because they need a lot of support and access to the cl inic and the workf low. For most spin-off companies there is not an app store in the cl inic where you can just input your method and it wi l l work everywhere. You have to talk to each cl inic individual ly. You could couple up with larger companies but that ’s also real ly hard. The situation is not optimal and there are many hurdles that prevent it from being real ly successful in that crucial aspect of getting to the patient. Thinking about DKFZ and what he is most proud of, Klaus points to their seminal work on prostate imaging. PSMA imaging was developed at DKFZ and i s now going internat ional and demonstrat ing i ts trans lat ion power. In terms of MICCAI -related work, he points to the strategic focus on data science in recent years, and that DKFZ as an inst i tut ion has bui l t up a lot of competence in data sciences in di fferent sectors of oncology, including bioinformat ic and omics. They are doing a great job forming networks and coordinat ing networking efforts, which i s increas ingly important in medicine, and are bui lding the infrastructure that i s requi red in order to form federated data analys i s and projects in consort ium. Final ly, Klaus tel l s us he i s thankful for something a l i tt le closer to home. Lena Maier-Hein , Klaus’s wi fe, i s al so a head of department at DKFZ. “I ’m real ly grateful that DKFZ al lowed us to have such a terr i f ic envi ronment to give the room for both of us to actual ly be working together in the MICCAI communi ty wi th two independent groups here. That ’s a real ly great aspect and I ’m real ly thankful for that .” "PSMA imaging was developed at DKFZ and is now going international and demonstrating its translation power.” “That’s probably going to be Lena”
