Computer Vision News - August 2020

Dear readers, Welcome to this August issue of Computer Vision News . It includes the BEST OF MIDL section, in which we have distilled the best of the best from the Medical Imaging with Deep Learning conference . As you all know, MIDL 2020 (expected to be held in Montreal, Canada) went virtual, like CVPR and many other community events. We covered the show a few weeks ago with a special magazine called MIDL Vision . What we highlight here can certainly be called the BEST OF MIDL, since we have interviewed for you the winner and the three runner ups of the Best Paper Award, as chosen by an independent team composed of members of the MIDL program committee. You will find four reviews of their papers, starting with this year’s champion on page 12. Just like all our BEST OF’s, this BEST OF MIDL section features just a tiny portion of the event, just enough to give you an idea of the participant’s experience at this year’s conference. Of course, we wholeheartedly hope for a safe in-person experience at MIDL 2021 ! Our featured research of the month on page 28 is 3D-RADNet , attentively scrutinized by editor Marica Muffoletto . Our tool of the month is fast.ai , a rather unconventional way to make deep learning easier to use; don’t miss the full review (with code!) by editor Ioannis Valasakis on page 4! In line with fast.ai ’s uncool slogan (“ Making neural nets uncool again ”), we also tried to make our feature as uncool as possible… Last but not least, this issue offers also a fascinating interview with NVIDIA Solution Architect in charge of healthcare Nicola Rieke , who shared with us what it means to work on ideas and projects that actually make it to the point of care for real patients.
