Computer Vision News - October 2018
if we have cone-beam CT interventionally, then we do not actually need any interoperative calibration, which makes this system seamlessly integrate into many workflows , which is very appealing .” Greg reveals that the next steps for this project will be to perform clinically relevant applications and testing for accuracy as well as for ease of use. As a surgeon, he perceives this to be an intuitive solution to a lot of navigational problems and thinks that it has the potential to change how certain surgical procedures are performed. Mathias points out that although the work makes certain surgical tasks very easy, there is still a lack in quality of the image data that they show, so improving the visualisation is a next step for him. He says that it will directly benefit viewpoint planning, because it’s very intuitive to performing in this particular way. Mathias also hopes this work will allow surgeons to better understand two trajectories , particularly for complex pelvis fractures where the anatomy is very difficult. Greg explains further: “ The navigation will be extremely helpful in the complex anatomy of the pelvic bones, because the anatomy is 3-dimensional and is hidden in soft tissues and is very difficult to appreciate from the outside world, outside the body. Getting these trajectories visualised in the way that you can see in this project really enhances our surgical precision and workflow .” Finally, Greg looks to the future: “ The most impressive thing about being part of this conference is seeing how much technology goes into very simple and innovative yet elegant techniques that we can bring to the operating room. We are on the verge of very disruptive technology taking a great part in our surgical procedures and enhancing our workflow, our ability to perform accurate, precise and elegant work. It’s exciting to be here to see it .” The guys gave a live demo to those who come along to their poster session, as they had two HoloLenses that allowed them to mimic the system on site. They invited anyone who wants to play with HoloLenses and this master-slave tracking relative to the same coordinate system to come and play. Mathias Unberath 51 Wednesday
