too much, and it might be time to do something else. I don’t know the right kind of heuristic for how to know this. I know that in my own PhD I have worked on projects several times that went nowhere and at some point, I said, “ Okay, this is not working ”, and switched to something else. One way to think about it is that if you feel like you are pushing, and things are still exciting to you, and you’re still in the chase, you probably want to push more. If you feel like you are getting bored with the subject, it might make sense to switch to something else. Maybe even temporarily just try something else. Go in for an internship somewhere and do something else for a little bit. Then you might be able to come back with new ideas. I have a couple of projects that I have been tackling for a decade now. It keeps not working and then I keep returning to it. Every time, it gets a little bit better. Maybe one day you will tell us that they succeeded. Some of them have succeeded. The idea of cycle consistency, for example, that I have been pushing for maybe five years. Finally, with CycleGAN, it has succeeded, but it took a long time! But the taste of victory is sweet?
