Ralph Anzarouth: Polina, at this conference and in previous ones, you have met many people starting their careers. Is there anything that the younger generation has that the older generation didn’t have, but would have benefited them? Polina Golland: I think how freely they move between technologies and how often times they are much more fearless than we are looking at new things. I think because of the technology now enabling it, they explore computation much better. Ralph: You are surprised that they are fearless. What should they fear? Polina: They shouldn’t. They should be like that. Ralph: So we are less like that? Polina: I think we are more cautious. Ralph: What drives you to look for new solutions, ideas, and inventions, especially after you have already done so much? Polina: Curiosity. Ralph: Does the curiosity ever fade? Polina: I hope that curiosity doesn’t diminish with how long I’ve done something. It’s still there. When you face a new problem, at least for me, I don’t think having solved a couple before affects how curious I am or not. Your question seems to imply that it should diminish. Ralph: Well, it’s more to ask you whether this happens or not in your work. Polina: Also, if I stop being curious about this, I would do something else. Ralph: What else would you do then? Polina: I would probably become a student. Ralph: That would be nice! I’d like to do that too. If you could, on the contrary, take one feature from our generation and give it to the younger generation, what would you give them? Polina: Oh no, they have to do it on their own. I don’t think we should try to impart wisdom. CVPR Daily: Thursday Interview with Polina Golland 34 “ The new generation is much more fearless ” BEST OF MICCAI
