DAILY T u e s d a y Women in Computer Vision 30 to share because I was volunteering back then. I actually asked a lot of people about PhD advice in general. What I actually took out of it was that everyone was somehow struggling. Maybe that’s not the perfect answer. That’s a good question because I don’t often ask people for advice. I don’t have one person to point out right now. Most people said you will have struggles. Don’t worry. They will say something like find people to support you. Believe in yourself. Overall, the message I took out of that really inspired me was that everyone is struggling, not really from a specific person but from the community. Two years ago I interviewed Jessica Sieren. She told me , “If you don’t have a crisis during your PhD, you’re not doing it right!” [ laughs ] That’s probably also a very, very correct thing. Learning from others, sometimes it helps you. But in the end, you can only put it into practice if you experience it. You realize how wise their words were. I totally agree with what she said. Did you have the temptation to give up? I think everyone is like that at some point. I think it’s just against my personality to really do it. You have these thoughts, but I think you have to breathe, take a moment, and think about everything. Yes, I definitely had that. It’s similar to sports, right? You do a long run and then Who taught you that? I think it was more frommyself, through experience. When I was younger, sometimes I felt like I didn’t want to seemstupid. If I didn’t know something, sometimes I didn’t say anything. I really hid the fact that I didn’t know something. It’s really about learning from each other and really opening up when you struggle to understand something. That’s also another thing; people make mistakes often. They just assume that the other person knows everything, especially in research. But they may have a lack of knowledge in specific areas just like you. The fact that you actually acknowledge that you don’t know, it really helps a lot in PhD life. Also, other people don’t know everything either. Is there something that impressed you that you learned from someone else? There is a funny story. When I went to my very first conference at ICCV, I was onemonth intomy PhD. I had no project
