Daily CVPR - Tuesday

CVPR Daily: Faezeh, where do you study? Faezeh: I’m doing a PhD at University of Louisville, Kentucky. CVPR Daily: What is your work about? Faezeh: My current research project is on vehicle make and model recognition. Basically, I guess it’s clear… In the video images of security cameras, we just try to recognize the make and model of the car that’s passing and use that for security applications. CVPR Daily: Why did you choose computer vision technologies for a career? Faezeh: Well, I was in the field of artificial intelligence during my Masters back in Iran, and then what I really loved about computer vision is that I’m a very visual person. I have a background in arts, and computer vision let me understand.. I mean I can see things, and then I could understand the background of those things. It’s very fascinating to let computers do the same thing that our visual system does. So I really loved that. I wanted to make intelligent systems which can see, basically. CVPR Daily: Please tell me, is it more difficult for a woman in computer vision? If yes, why? Faezeh: Well, I guess it’s getting better and better every year. I don’t know, but it used to be very difficult. In the US it is much better than in other countries. I’m not sure about Europe, but at least in my hometown in Tehran, it wasn’t an option to do research as a woman. So I had a Masters from Iran, but there was no option to work in that area. So I came here, and I continued my studies. Of course, I did some work here at different internships that gave me a better understanding of the whole thing. 10 CVPR Daily: Tuesday Women in Computer Vision Faezeh Tafazzoli
